Weather leads to abandonment
Warminster Athletic FC 2 Staverton Rangers FC 1 – Abandoned after 45 Minutes
The last time Warminster Athletic FC and Staverton Rangers FC faced each other, Warminster were 8-2 in front before the match was abandoned after 74 minutes. On this occasion it was a case of de-ja-vu, unlike the first meeting where poor discipline led to the game being abandoned, it was the weather that saw the reverse fixture being postponed at half time with Warminster 2-1 up.
With the game at St George’s starting in atrocious conditions which both teams struggled to come to terms with it was Staverton who had the first chance of note and only a smart save from keeper Kristian Green denied Steve Bryant the opener for Staverton on 7 minutes.
Staverton were left aggrieved in the 12th minute when they were denied what looked to be a certain penalty after Lance Davis had been chopped down in the box. At the other end Noah Millard weak effort for the hosts almost caught keeper Kieran Powell out, hitting the post before rolling out for a goal kick.
After having had a penalty appeal of their own turned down, Staverton were fuming midway through the half when Warminster were given one, which Gareth Beardshaw stroked home for 1-0.
Staverton who were down to 9 players, having had 2 sin binned in the aftermath of the penalty decision battled back well and levelled matters, thanks to an excellent cross from Steve Bryant that was headed home by Tom A’Court to make it 1-1.
2-1 ahead at the break after they reclaimed the lead thanks to a second of the morning for Gareth Beardshaw, Stuart Green’s team would have expected to kick-on, however with the already dreadful conditions worsening by the minute, match referee Dominic Mortimer made the correct decision in the interests of players safety to abandon the game.
