WILTSHIRE SUNDAY CUP – SEMI FINAL

Penalty heartache for Devizes in Cup semi-final

FC Devizes United 3 DPR FC 3 – DPR FC win 13-12 on penalties

With FC Lacock already through to the final of this season’s Wiltshire Sunday Cup, FC Devizes United missed out on their opportunity of setting up a first ever all shoestrings-chargrill – sponsored Chippenham Sunday League final after they suffered a heart-breaking 13-12 penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands Swindon League outfit DPR FC who twice came from behind in 90 minutes to claim a 3-3 draw and force the dreaded penalties.

Devizes took an early lead courtesy of Jamie Walters, but DPR came back well and grabbed a deserved equaliser, scored by William Backhouse which came after both teams had been denied by the post.

A goal keeping error from the DPR stopper allowed Gabe Costello to regain the lead for Devizes and when he scored his second from a Jamie Walters assist to put Oscar Webster’s side 3-1 to the good, an all Chippenham League final look on the cards.

DPR had other ideas and started to get the upper hand and when Tom McCulloch halved the arrears it was game on and Devizes were unable to see out the 90 minutes as Andy Bilko took the game to penalties when he headed home a late, late equaliser that Devizes had no answer too.

George Bettles and Luke Enderby scored the first 2 spot kicks for Devizes before Declan Mcstravick missed his effort, which tied things at 2-2 as DPR had missed their second effort.  Successful spot kick for both teams took it to 8-8 before both teams missed their 10th attempt.  Both keepers converted their efforts for 9-9, and then it started all over again.

From 9-9 it went to 12 apiece before Charlie Strickland missed the 29th penalty of the shoot-out, and it was left to Mannie Mesas to win it for DPR FC, which he did as he held his nerve to fire home and seal an incredible 13-12 win for Liam Lewis’ side.
