FC Lacock bid for Sunday Cup glory

FC Lacock make the short trip to Melksham Town’s, Oakfield Stadium of Sunday morning bidding to become the first from the Shoestring-chargrill sponsored Chippenham & District Sunday Football League to the lift the prestigious Wiltshire Sunday Cup since The Dursley Arms destroyed Swindon Sunday League outfit AFC Gas 9-0 to lift the trophy in 2017.

Two years ago Worton & Cheverell reached the final, but before they had the chance to face Penhill United for their bid of cup glory the season was curtailed following the outbreak of the Coronavirus and with Pete Drew’s side withdrawing from the league, they missed out on the chance to join the likes of four time winners Corsham Centre FC, Castle Combe FC, Shaw & Whitley Hibs, FC Jager, Biddestone Social and Southwick United who in 1977 were the first team from the League to savour Sunday Cup success.

Ryan Ross will hope that his Lacock side will be at their very best when they face top Swindon League outfit DPR FC who are chasing a League and Cup treble.  In the final of the SSFL Knockout Cup Final and red hot favourites to lift the Division Two DPR will be formidable opponents for a Lacock side who have had a mixed bag of results in recent times.

DPR started their cup run with a 5-1 success over 147SC FC, which was followed by a 7-2 victory against Scorpian FC.  After a goalless 90 minutes away at Penhill United in the quarter-finals, a 4-3 penalty success saw them set up a semi-final showdown with CDSFL side FC Devizes United who were 3-1 up before they conceded two late goals which saw the full time score finish at 3-apiece.  After an incredible 30 penalties, DPR won through 13-12 to deny Devizes a place in what would have been a first ever all Chippenham League final.

Lacock who booked their place in the final with a 5-2 semi-final success against AFC Melksham where top scorer Josh Bright scored a hat trick.  The villagers started their campaign with an 8-1 triumph over near neighbours FC Box, this was followed by a 3-2 home success over Halfway House and a 2-1 win again on home soil again Croft Juniors.

DPR who have only lost once all season will start the final as slight favourites, but Lacock have the players capable of causing an upset and if Josh Bright, Mark Dolman and Rory Davis can produce the goods in front of goal they will be looking to Dave Cardus to keep the DPR frontline out at the other end.

Hopefully the sun will continue to shine and come 12.30 on Sunday afternoon, Lacock will be holding aloft the Wiltshire Sunday Cup.
