SUBSIDIARY CUP ROUND UP – 17 April

Brilliant Beeches thump Icons in Sub Cup

Chippenham Icons FC 2 Beeches FC 6

Last season’s beaten Gooding Accounts sponsored Subsidiary Cup finalists Beeches FC re one match away from reaching back-to-back finals. A 6-2 quarter-final triumph over competition favourites Chippenham Icons FC means that Andy Anderson’s First division chargers take on Second division, Steeple Ashton next Sunday for a place in the final.

Although leading scorer Steve Ball and Drew Adams will take the plaudits for Beeches FC their excellent victory was built on an excellent all-round team performance that saw them better the Icons in every department as they exposed frailties in the hosts defence to take a 3-1 interval lead and set the platform to maintain the pressure in the second and brush their top flight rivals aside.

Gary McLaughlin gave Beeches a 7th minute lead and although Joe Hylands restored parity for the Icons midway through the half, they were unable to build on Hylands goal as Steve Ball regained the lead for Beeches on 35 minutes and things got better for Anderson’s who are already in the final of WG Parr Trophy when Drew Adam’s made it 3-1 on the stroke of half time.

Luke Child gave Icons hope of getting back in the game when he pulled a goal back on 56 minutes, however it proved to be little more than a consolation as, Beeches just like they did in the first half took the chances that come their way.  Drew Adams restored their two goal advantage in the 75th minute with his second and Beeches fourth of the morning.

Beeches goal machine Steve Ball then took charge the final 12 minutes of the tie as he added his second on 78 minutes to make it 5-2 and his late penalty that completed the scoring and his own hat trick for 6-2 after Jack Angel had missed from the penalty spot for Icons.

Having already beaten Steeple Ashton 6-5 in a pulsating semi-final clash in reaching the WG Parr Trophy final, Beeches who will be missing a few players for next week’s Subsidiary Cup semi-final will still be favourites make it to the 8th May Final.
