First Division, Lavis FC saw off a brave challenge from Second Division, Steeple Ashton FC to claim a 4-1 triumph to lift this season’s Gooding Accounts sponsored Subsidiary Cup. On what felt like one of the hottest days of the year so far, Lavis FC made a blistering start to the game and caught Steeple Ashton cold as a great move saw Olly Sterling set up brother Jack who after just 40 seconds put Aaron Latchem’s side 1-0 up.
After taking the early lead it looked as if it was only a matter of time before Lavis would double their advantage, with Ashton keeper Dale Raine having to be alert to punch a Olly Sterling cross clear of the oncoming Kieran Plummer on 8 minutes.
With Ashton know getting a foothold in the contest they had their first shot at goal, but Aaron Burbidge’s strike from distance was one he would want to forget as it flew well wide of the target. Ashton’s next effort came on 15 minutes when goalkeeper Dale Raine launched a huge kick up field which had his opposite number Kierran Ramsey back peddling before safely claiming the ball to deny Raine what would have a spectacular if unexpected goal.
A minute later a snap shot Adam Gough almost caught Ramsey out, but he was equal to it, but from Ashton’s next attack they were on level terms, Stefan Brinzaru producing a great finish to make it 1-apiece.

Matty Hall went close to restoring the lead for Lavis on 30 minutes, but he could only watch as his goal bound header was cleared off the line.
With Hall out of position and making his way back up the pitch, Ashton cleared their lines, but the ball fell to Hall who was now in his own half, a quick turn of pace took him back into the Ashton half where he delivered a delightful 40yard diagonal cross to Levi Wood who had ghosted in from nowhere to plant the ball beyond keeper Raine and put Lavis 2-1 up.
On 35 minutes, Lavis added their third of the afternoon, Levi Wood scoring from the penalty spot after Carl Ledbury had upended Matt Purdy.

With the first half drawing to a close Olly Sterling went close to giving Lavis a 4-1 interval lead, but his effort finished just the wrong side of the post.
The second half never really got going, as neither team really threatened to add to the first half goals, with Ashton’s Will Harford going closest with a header before Matt Purdy finally killed the game when he made it 4-1 to Lavis in the 81st minute.

Referee, Alex Matthews finally blew for time, sending Lavis players and supporters wild, while Steeple Ashton who can be proud of their cup run had to accept that on the day they were beaten by the better team. Both teams were a credit to themselves and the league for the sporting manner in which they played the game which made life easy for the referee and his team of Adrian Hunt, Neil Hawker and Pete Lowe.

Both teams and match officials received their mementoes from Cup sponsor Sam Gooding, Lavis captain Darren Jones collected the winners Trophy and team mate Jack Sterling won the Player of the Match award.
