Derby Delight For Benger

Sutton Benger are indebted to the help offered by The Pewsham Manager Steve Browning and the groundskeeper at local neighbours Goatacre Kevin Iles as a malfunction with the pitch marker left Kai Flack in a tight spot prior to the match.

But the match was saved to allow this derby match to go ahead as scheduled and Benger took full advantage of Audley FC being in cup action to take top spot early on in the season thanks to a 3-0 victory against Chris Simpkins’ side.

Despite Kingfisher coming into the match under strength it was an extremely competitive affair if a little cagey in the opening 15 minutes with Benger’s passing game only being successful in patches and there were no real clear cut chances of note.

The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when James Hernandez chased down a slightly over hit pass and was able to block the Mark de Souza’s attempted clearance and the ball fell into the path of Matthew Bartlett who was on hand to calmy take the ball past de Souza and slot home passed the defender on the line for 1-0.

Shortly before the break, Sutton Benger were awarded a contested penalty, Kingfisher claiming that the ball struck the defenders arm from close range but Benger and the most important person at this point, the referee, felt the arms were in an unnatural position. Josh Hard stepped up dispatched the penalty with aplomb for a half time score line of 2-0.

Kingfisher continued to battle hard in the second half but Benger, with the numerical advantage from the bench began to press for the 3rd and conclusive goal to seal the deal and they thought they were about to do just that when James Weston was put through on goal but his finish was superbly saved by the onrushing de Souza to keep the score at 2-0.

As the match was drawing to a close the win was finally cemented when one of those substitutes Kai Flack was able to call on, Dan Smith, got on the end of a Josh Hard cross after some fine work on the edge of the box from the latter.
