BRITISH LION’S DEFEAT AT SPIRES, HANDS TITLE TO HOURGLASS

THURSDAY 27th April 2023

Spires Athletic FC 3 The British Lion FC 2

In a feisty game at Stanley Park, both sides scored early. Macauley Chamberlain opened the scoring for Spires, with Robbie Whyte replying for British Lion to tie the score at 1-1. Spires then began to take control of the game and went back in front as Aiden Jackson scored. This seemed to spur British Lion and the Spires goal began to lead a charmed life as both uprights and the crossbar were hit. Spires then surprised the visitors as they broke away and Joshua Bolwell scored to give them a 3-1 half time lead.

Again, there was little between the two teams in the second half as both battled for dominance and tackles flew in. British Lion however started Spires nerves jangling when from a Robbie Whyte corner Ashton Schora’s bullet header reduce the lead to 3-2.

More drama followed as British Lion conceded a penalty. Spires Zachary Baskerville’s strike was however saved. With minutes to go the Spires penalty taker was shown a second yellow card and they had to play time out with ten men. British Lion could not find the final ball to make their advantage count and Spires held out for a deserved narrow win.

The win by Spires who have completed their season and are likely to finish in third place appears to have ended British Lion’s hopes of top spot. With both Lion and Hourglass having their final game in the coming week and Hourglass having a three point lead, if the teams finish level, Hourglass will take the title on a better head to head aggregate result.
