PREMIER DIVISION ROUND UP – 22nd October 2023
University Of Bath FC 2 FC Devizes United 6
WEBSTER ON FORM FOR LEADERS
Devizes United maintained their lead at the top of the Chippenham & Bath Football League, Premier Division and as they visited the University of Bath.
Going into the game on the back of a 5-1 home win three weeks ago they were firm favourites to take the spoils for a second time.
They raced into a 4-0 half time lead before adding two more in the second half. An Oscar Webster hat trick along with two from Kieron Gleed goals and one from Archie Haggerty made up their half dozen.
Scott Jarman and Charlie Farrow both scored for the University in the second half to leave the final score at 6-2 for the visitors,
Corsham Pavao FC 1 Lavis FC 1
DEFENCES SHINE IN PAVAO & LAVIS STALEMATE
Just two weeks after Lavis FC picked up their first victory of the campaign with a 4-2 triumph over Corsham Pavao, the two sides met in the reverse fixture at Vallens Terrace and in what was another end to end contest between the two evenly matched teams, a 1-1 draw resulted in both teams sharing the points.
Olly Sterling had a glorious opportunity to give Lavis the lead, having raced clear of his marker he found himself one on one with Corsham keeper Kieran Perrin who produced a smart save to deny Sterling an opener.
At the other end Ben Wickens really should have put Corsham ahead, with the goal at his mercy and with just keeper Ryan Stevens to beat he skied his effort from 6 yards out over the bar.
Lavis broke the deadlock through Olly Sterling who was on hand to turn home an Arthur Dolan cross.
Corsham got themselves back on level terms, after been awarded a somewhat controversial free kick, 20 yard out, Cory Harbour-Burgess, keep his effort low and it found the back of the Lavis net to make it 1-apiece.
Both teams were knocking on the door for the remainder of the first half, however but like the second 45 minutes both defences and keepers came out on top with no further goals being scored.
The second half may have remained goalless, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying for both sides as the second 45 minutes flowed from end to end and saw Tom Blackman twice go one on one with keeper Perrin whose presence was enough to make him put both chances wide of the target.
Lavis keeper Ryan Stevens also produced a couple of great saves to keep the score at 1-1 and when Matt Purdy’s cross was turned home by Olly Sterling, Stevens must have thought that his effort had been rewarded, however the goal was ruled out for offside. This came after Ben Wickens had a goal ruled out for a foul.
Corsham Pavao also thought they had stolen all 3 points, but just like Lavis, what they believed to be a match winner from Adam Mitchell deep into injury time was ruled out for offside, leaving both teams to settle for a point apiece from a thrilling and entertaining stalemate.
