PREMIER DIVISION ROUND UP – 17th December 2023
FC Devizes United 3 Kingsmead FC 2
DEVIZES EDGE BATTLE OF TOP FLIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS
FC Devizes United have been the Chippenham & Bath League, Premier Division runners up for the last two seasons, however James Stobart’s side will be starting to believe that this season they will at last shake off the bridesmaid tag and actually become the Bride. After finishing behind both AFC Melksham and Scoop FC, a 3-2 victory over Kingsmead has put them firmly in the driving seat and only if they fail to win both of their remaining matches against Corsham Pavao and Lavis FC, will the chasing pack get the chance to catch the long time leaders.
In what was another thrilling contest between two of the division’s heavyweights Devizes who beat their rivals 3-0 when the met back in September looked on course for another comfortable victory after they took a 2-0 interval lead thanks to goals from Kieron Gleed and Jack Baker.
After the break, Rhys Talmash who so many times previously has been thorn in Devizes side, pulled a goal back for Kingsmead, however unlike previous season’s when the hosts may have imploded they regrouped and regained their two goal lead courtesy of a Declan McStravick effort.
Kingsmead rallied and another Rhys Talmash strike made things more interesting than the leaders would have wanted, but some solid defending allowed the hosts to claim what could be seen as a title winning victory.
