DEVIZES SUFFER SUNDAY CUP HEARTACHE

It was always going to be a hard task for Chippenham & Bath League side FC Devizes United as they faced the current holders of the County Cup, Tidworth Town Youth at Melksham’s Oakfield Stadium. They did not however disgrace themselves with the result in doubt until virtually the last minute.

Tidworth opened the scoring after just five minutes with a headed goal following a cross on the left. Devizes then pressed hard for an equaliser, but they could not find a way past the Tidworth keeper or their very well organised defence.

A head injury to Devizes’ Jamie Walters following a goalmouth scramble where somehow the Tidworth goal led a charmed life, caused a long delay but Tidworth went into half time with a 1-0 lead. Both teams having had chances to score.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Devizes pressing but being unable to score, whilst Tidworth looked dangerous as the broke quickly.

Devizes finally broke through after 85 minutes as Jamie Walters equalised for Devizes with a low shot. Although the momentum was now with Devizes it certainly looked as though the game was heading for penalties as both teams missed chances.

With the final whistle looming, Tidworth broke on the right and a rash challenge in the area led to a penalty for Tidworth from which they scored to dent Devizes hopes of a memorable cup win.

A minute later the final whistle saw Tidworth collect the cup for the second successive year with a 2-1 win, thanks to goals from Harrison Hale and George Higgins.
